  • "Inventors and Sportsmen: Maine Gunsmiths in the 1800s" Exhibition Held Over Through May 27, 2017

    The popular exhibition, "Inventors and Sportsmen: Maine Gunsmiths in the 1800s" will be held over through Saturday, May 27, 2017. Featuring a variety of guns made by 22 Maine makers, the exhibition highlights the work of John Hall, a Portland cooper turned gunsmith, as well as Hiram Leonard, a native of Sebec. Leonard, described by Henry Thoreau as "the chief...hunter in Maine," made a gun and pistol shown in the exhibit. Leonard eventually became a pioneer in the mass-production of fishing rods. A trout rod and reel by Leonard are also among the 75 objects shown in the exhibition.

  • Museum's Newest Exhibition Features Rare Maliseet-Made Blanket Coat

    The museum's newest exhibition, "Beyond Boundaries: The World of the Capote," features a remarkable man's winter coat, known as a capote, dating from 1842. On public view for the first time, the capote, with moccasins and matching leggings, shows beautiful porcupine quill embroidery and dyed moose hair tassels bound with tinkling cones. The exhibition will be on view through September 2017.
