A Jewel for the Maine State Museum
The Maine State Museum is pleased to announce the acquisition of the 1817-1819 logbook for the Jewel, a Portland vessel that transported goods on a route serving U.S. eastern and southern ports, West Indies, Cuba, England, Portugal, and back.
A Tribute to a “Guiding Light,” Charles Scontras
Maine labor historian, educator, and author Charles Scontras died on March 7, 2021. A professor at the University of Maine for 36 years, Scontras devoted his career to telling the stories of everyday, working-class Maine people.

Field trip season is a little different this year! In a typical fall season, thousands of students, teachers, and chaperones visit the museum for their annual class field trip. During the museum’s closure, we have converted our beloved scavenger hunt into a digital version.
